Switzerland Communication Profile 2012
Switzerland - Broadband Market
Switzerland has one of Europe's highest Internet and broadband penetration rates in Europe. DSL is the principal access technology, with the market dominated by Swisscom's TV product. UPC's Cablecom also offers cable broadband in several major cities.
The operator's plan to launch a 100Mb/s service later in 2009 will significantly strengthen its competitive advantage. Swisscom's CHF8 billion infrastructure investment will greatly expand the country's fibre-optic footprint, as will the activities of electricity utilities which have moved into the telecom arena. Wireless broadband also adds to the mix.
Switzerland - Convergence - Triple Play & Digital TV
Switzerland's modern telecom networks and excellent broadband infrastructure supports one of Europe's more developed markets for convergent media. Digital TV has developed well, while some areas of the country have already had analogue transmission switched off. The incumbent, Swisscom, has invested in fibre networks while the principal cable network operator, UPC Switzerland, has upgraded much of its network to provide 100Mb/s services. Together, these networks provide a growing number of consumers with bundled offers.
Switzerland - Telecom Market
Switzerland enjoys one of the highest broadband penetration rates in the OECD and a competitive mobile market served by a triopoly of international players. The country's mountainous topography helped to establish a number of cable networks, though in recent years DSL has become the preferred means for accessing broadband and triple play services. These platforms have been supplemented by a rapidly emerging fibre-optic sector, spearheaded by Swisscom and a number of regional utility companies.
Although not a member of the EU, the country's economic integration has meant that its telecom market deregulation has followed the EU's liberalisation framework, including the recent regulations on international voice roaming.
Switzerland - Mobile Market
Switzerland's mobile penetration is on a par with the European average. The three mobile network operators have invested in HSDPA technology in a bid to encourage consumer use of mobile data services, thus increasing otherwise stagnant ARPU. Mobile TV has progressed, with Swisscom Broadcast having been awarded a national mobile TV licence using the DVB-H standard. The regulator has allocated GSM spectrum for 3G use, thus enabling the operators to extend their 3G network reach.
