Migration drives EU population up, Luxembourg, Sweden, Malta register large growth in 2016
CROATIA, 2017/07/11 Eurostat on Monday said in a press release that the people of the European Union (EU) was estimated at 511.8 million on January 1, 2017 due to net migration. According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, during the year of 2016, 18 EU members witnessed people increases, while 10 members witnessed people decreases. The major increase was recorded in Luxembourg which was 19.8 per 1,000 residents, according to the data. Sweden's 14.5 per 1,000 residents and Malta's 13.8 per 1,000 residents ranked the second and the third. -

Hungarian Border ‘Smart Fence’ Violates Rights
HUNGARY, 2017/07/08 Next Belgrade newspaper Politika reported on Tuesday that the Hungarian government is testing an electrified ‘smart fence’ on the border with Serbia, the Belgrade Centre for Protection and Help for Asylum-Seekers said the move was a violation of European human-rights agreements. “Hungarian [border police] are beating migrants, attacking them with dogs, they are even beating children, and according to statements of migrants, they are periodically turning on the electricity in some parts of the [border] fence,” Rados Djurovic from the Centre told BIRN. According to Politika, Hungarian officials insisted however that the voltage of the electricity is low, at 900 volts, so “it can’t seriously hurt people”. -

The European Union (EU) and Tunisia signed an agreement on population
EUROPEAN UNION, 2014/03/05 The European Union (EU) and Tunisia on Monday signed an agreement on the movement of populations between the Europe and Tunisia. The EU Commissioner in charge of Interior affairs, Mrs Cecilia Malmström, and the Tunisian ambassador to the EU, Tehar Cherif, both read a joint declaration, stating that the agreement is as well meant to promote a common and responsible management of migration -- through the simplification of visa procedures. Mrs. Malmström indicated that the EU will support the Tunisian authorities in their efforts regarding political asylum with a view to establishing a system of protection for refugees and asylum seekers. -
