Montenegro Geography Profile 2012
Montenegro is located in the Balkans. This is an area of relatively rectangular shape, bounded on the south by the Adriatic Sea to the west by Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia by the North, North-East in Kosovo and finally in the South East by Albania.
The Montenegrin territory extends from the high mountains on the border with Serbia and Albania - part of the karst of the western Balkan Peninsula - a narrow coastal plain up to two to six miles wide. The plain stops abruptly in the north, where Mount Lovcen Orjen and plunge into the Bay of Kotor. Thus, although having a wide outlet to the sea, the country has no major port because of a very rugged coastline.
The karst region of Montenegro is about 1000 m altitude, some parts aabout 2000 m as Orjen Mount (1894 m), highest point of the coastal limestone ranges. The valley of the Zeta is the lowest zone, with an altitude around 500 m. Montenegro has few natural cavities.
The mountains of Montenegro are among the most rugged terrain in Europe and among the parties who were the most eroded in the Balkan Peninsula during the last ice age. The land rises to Zla Kolata, Prokletije in the mountains at an altitude of 2534 m.
