Malta People Profile 2012
Maltese are descendants of the Phoenicians, a mixture of Arabic and Italian. English and Maltese (a Semitic language that has a strong Italian) are the official languages. Italian is widely spoken. Roman Catholicism is the established religion and faith of 98 percent of the population.
