The population of Tallinn, the capital and largest city, was 503,000. About 60 per cent of the people are Estonian; most of the rest are Russian.

Estonian, the republic's official language, belongs to the Ural-Altaic language family and is closely related to Finnish. Many Estonians also speak Russian. Most Estonians are Lutheran. Other faiths include Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic.

Natural population growth in Latvia negative in 9 months

Provisional data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that, during nine months of the year 2013, 15 380 newborn were registered in Latvia, moreover 1740 babies were born in September. As compared to nine months of 2012 when 15 130 babies were born, the number is 250 newborn higher.

The number of births currently does not include children born abroad*, and data will be revised bearing in mind that children are counted up basing on their registration month instead of their birth month, in addition child may be registered within a month after the birth.
