Renewable energy in Africa

  • Clean technology companies

EUROPE, 2013/01/01 It was an extra discouraging year for Canadians investing in clean technology companies but the companies that survived are giving the industry a glimmer of hope within the gloom. Next a dismal 2011, the completed year was supposed to see some of the beaten down public firms in the sector showing their stuff and gaining momentum. Instead, several players collapsed, and a lot of of those that remain have seen their stock fall dramatically. Only a handful have managed strong returns over the course of the year.
  • Kenya’s erratic supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

KENYA, 2012/12/30 Kenya’s erratic supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is set to be streamlined with the completion of a new offshore import handling terminal in Mombasa. Africa Gas and Oil Ltd (AGOL) has completed building a bulk import handling and storage terminal to ease the quick offloading of sea tankers ferrying over 5,000 tonnes of LPG from the Middle East.
  • China Export Import Bank (Exim)

ETHIOPIA, 2012/12/20 Ethiopia’s proposed Aysha I Wind Farm is drawing increasing investor attention, with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the China Export Import Bank (Exim) expressing interest in financing the project. The Aysha Wind Power Project which envisages the construction of three plants with a total output capacity of 100 megawatts – launched by the Ethiopian Electric Power Company (EEP) – has seen multiple significant foreign investors indicate a desire to finance the new development, the most recent party to enter the financing fray being the EIB, EEP officials have revealed.
  • Ethiopia struggles to boost solar power output

ETHIOPIA, 2012/12/17  Often dubbed the country with 13 months of sunshine, Ethiopia’s solar power industry is surprisingly lacking infrastructure and development. Investment remains low for renewable energy in the East African country and experts believe that the government must move forward on plans to boost solar power to meet growing energy needs. Miskir Negash, chief of corporate relations at the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, the national monopoly electricity provider, said recently that “the relative expense of solar energy compared to wind energy or hydro, especially for large projects, relegates its usefulness to smaller-scale projects.”

CAPE VERDE, 2012/12/09 A large scale onshore wind farm of extra than 28 megawatts is to be established on four islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. The project is being developed by InfraCo in a public-private partnership between the government of Cape Verde and local power utility Electra. The European Investment Bank and African Development Bank last week agreed to provide €45 million for the €65 million project.
  • Algeria has better reason than most to develop its renewable energy sector

ALGERIA, 2012/12/06 Gas and electricity supplier Sonelgaz is at the forefront of Algeria’s drive to promote and develop energy from renewable sources. “The challenge is how to get out of hydrocarbons,” says Noureddine Bouterfa, CEO of Sonelgaz. “It will not be easy but each contribution is precious and can have a ripple effect.”
  • Zimbabwe renewable energy investment

ZIMBABWE, 2012/12/05 After a decade of stagnation, Zimbabwe is now back, with economic increase at 9.3%. That has declined slightly because of the world economic downturn to 6%, but that is still quite impressive for an emerging economy.
