  • High Charcoal Prices Hit Poor Households Kenya

    KENYA, 2014/12/06 Households using charcoal for fuel have been hardest hit by high prices over the completed one and a half years, with the four-kilogramme tin costing above Sh70 over the period. Most affected are poor households in urban areas which usually use charcoal and kerosene for cooking and lighting, respectively. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the 4kg tin cost an average of Sh73.47 in October, remaining above Sh73 for the sixth consecutive month.
  • Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) gas pipeline project

    ITALY, 2014/11/19 Italian foreign minister said on Tuesday at a press conference following the launch of the Adriatic Ionian Macroregion strategy that the various problems connected with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) gas pipeline project would be resolved. ''The TAP project is significant for our country and for others linked to the Adriatic Ionian Macroregion. There are some issues that must be resolved,'' such as its environmental impact, he noted, ''but I am certain that they will be resolved.'' ''The key word is 'diversification','' he added.
  • Grid operators meet in Rome to discuss Med project

    ITALY, 2014/11/19 The general extraordinary session of the Association of Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (Med-TSO) reiterated on Tuesday the importance of electricity for Euro-Mediterranean security and integration. MED-TSO unites network operators from 17 nations in the area. The statement for the presentation of the conference in the Italian capital notes that utilities - energy, electricity and water - are ''the key to a new direction based on jobs''. ''Producing, transporting and using energy are activities vital to the economy and well-being of all populations.'' The assembly, ahead of the High Level energy Conference to be held by the Italian 6-month EU presidency on Wednesday at the foreign ministry, presented the three-time'Mediterranean Project' set to begin in 2015. The initiative will support infrastructure projects as a means towards integrating management of the power grids between the northern and southern Mediterranean, the very reason why Med-TSO was established in 2012.
  • Kenya Power Invest Sh96 Million in Kakamega Power Upgrade

    KENYA, 2014/11/10 Power supply in Kakamega is expected to improve as Kenya Power conducts a massive operation this weekend to rehabilitate power equipment and network serving the County at a cost of Sh96 million. Managing Director Ben Chumo says the exercise will ensure that the electricity network serving Kakamega County is robust and power supply consistent, to support efforts to minimise power outages occasioned by both planned and unplanned outages. Chumo said the Company will replace 620 wooden poles with 60 concrete poles and refurbish 20 distribution transformers in the county.
  • Energy Development - Central Africa Seeks Interconnection

    AFRICA, 2014/11/06 Ten nations of Central Africa are seeking ways of associating efforts and infrastructure to maximize the enormous energy potentials it has and journey the region out of darkness and under development. A 2014-2030 mutual strategy drafted by the Central African Power Pool (CAPP) with technical expertise of the European Union is under validation in a four-day workshop that began in Yaounde yesterday November 4 under the patronage of the Minister of Water Resources and Energy. Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of CAPP, Jean Chrysostome Mekondongo, said target is to federate efforts, maximize potentials and journey out of underdevelopment. He said there are two categories of projects concerned with the strategy. These include priority integrating projects and trans-border interconnection projects. "This document is a fundamental tool for putting in place medium and long-term community energy development strategy," he said.

  • Cheaper Electricity in Sight in Liberia

    LIBERIA, 2014/11/02 The Conex Crude Storage Terminal (CST) project in collaboration with the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company ("LPRC") is expected to be completed in December this year, says Lutech, the contracting company hired to do the construction work for this project. Upon completion, the CST facility, located near the Bong Mine Pier on Bushrod Island, will be used to bring in Heavy Fuel Oil, which is expected to enable the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) reduce the cost of electricity as a public utility by at approximately 50%.
  • SADC Targets U.S.$4 Billion High-Priority Energy Projects

    AFRICA, 2014/08/20 Southern Africa has identified at least nine high-priority energy transmission projects valued at additional than US$4 billion for promotion and marketing to investors. According to data released during the 34th Summit of SADC Heads of National and Government taking place in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, the nine projects are at various stages of development and include the flagship ZiZaBoNa Interconnector Project to be implemented by Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. Other projects accorded high priority include the Central Transmission Corridor (CTC), the Mozambique Backbone Project, the Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya Interconnector inclunding the proposed Namibia-Angola Interconnector that will connect Tanzania and Angola to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
  • Main trade union protests against high electricity, water tariffs

    MALI, 2014/07/09 The Malian National Workers' Union (UNTM), the country's major trade union, on Monday criticised the increase in the water and electricity tariffs announced by the water and electricity regulation committee (CREE). In a statement UNTM expressed disapproval with the new tariffs which came into force on 1 July. UNTM said the tariff increases would worsen the weak purchasing power of Malians in a difficult economic context at the same time as foodstuff prices were rising.
