  • EBRD, Kazakhstan cooperating in public services modernization

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/06/06 The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Kazakh government fruitfully continue cooperation on a wide-scale program to modernize public services in the country. The EBRD and the Akbulak Company, engaged in Aktobe city's municipal water and wastewater issues, signed a loan agreement in Astana on June 3 during the visit of EBRD President, Suma Chakrabarti to Kazakhstan, the EBRD said on June 3. According to the agreement, the bank will lend up to 2 billion tenge (€10 million equivalent) to Akbulak Company for modernizing the water and wastewater services in Aktobe.

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/05/26 The EBRD is helping Pavlodar, a major city in the north-east of Kazakhstan, to modernise the tramway system that is crucial for public transportation in the city. Pavlodar, one of the oldest cities of Kazakhstan, is home to over 330,000 people and most of them use trams as their major means of transport.

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/05/24 Kazakhstan's success in combating rural poverty and its new role as an emerging donor were high on the schedule of talks held between the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development and government officials. "IFAD is looking forward to deepening its relationship with Kazakhstan by supporting the implementation of their ‘Agrobusiness 2020’ strategy, in particular the promotion of smallholder farmer engagement to increase productivity and diversify the country’s agricultural economy," Michel Mordasini, IFAD Vice President said on May 21.
  • Cashless payments losing popularity in Kazakhstan

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/05/15 The popularity of non-cash payments is falling in Kazakhstan, according to a message from the analytical service, Ranking.kz. The message said that during a period between March 2014 and March 2015, the volume of cash withdrawals in Kazakhstan was 9.3 times higher than the volume of cashless payments by credit cards (574 billion tenges versus 62 billion tenges at the rate of 185.8 tenges/$1). “This is the biggest difference over the completed five years,” the message said.
  • Expert says Kazakhstan can abandon dollar in trade

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/04/25 Kazakhstan can refuse to use the dollar in trade with its closest partners, Eduard Poletaev, Kazakh expert and political analyst, editor-in-chief of the ‘World of Eurasia’ data and analytical magazine told Trend April 15. “It is completely possible to transfer a part of the agreements and a part of the contracts to national currencies within the bilateral relations or within the Eurasian Union,” said the expert. Poletaev said that it is as well possible to switch to payments in national currency with the nations that have regional strong currencies, for instance, China or Turkey.

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/04/25 In the current year, Kazakhstan's economy has evolved under the negative influence of external factors such as Russian ruble’s devaluation, the oil price fall and Kazakhstan’s large dependence on Russian economy. Kazakhstan’s GDP grew 2.2 % on-year in the initial quarter of 2015, Chief of the Statistics Committee at Kazakhstan’s National Economy Ministry, Alikhan Smailov, stated at a news conference on April 15. Kazakhstan’s GPD in 2014 stood at 4.2 %.
  • Lending to agrarian sector in focus of kazakh banks

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2015/04/25 Kazakhstan’s agrarian sector has become the majority dynamic one on the country’s credit market thanks to the national support. As of February 2015, the portfolio of bank loans to the agrarian sector amounted to 480 billion tenge with the 12.2-% increase during the year or 52.3 billion tenge (185.8 tenge = $1), , Ranking.kz analytical service reported. The gross profit of Kazakhstan’s medium and large agrarian companies exceeded 20 billion tenge, increasing by 66 % in 2014 compared to the same period of 2013. The profitability of the sphere was 8.2 % in 2014. The availability of loans for Kazakhstan’s agricultural enterprises in 2014 was the highest one for the last five years, the statement said. The average yearly fee rate on the long-term loans in this area stood in Jan.-Dec. 2014 at 10.4 %.
