Mauretania is one of the poorest countries in Africa. Its economy depends on iron ore extraction, fishing and foreign aid. Agriculture and livestock are the main source of income for more than 50% of the population. Offshore oil deposits were found recently, yet their impact on the economy failed to materialize. Growth prospects remain poor because of the heavy debt service burden, rapid population growth and vulnerability to climatic conditions.
