Liberia: Awareness campaign on to prevent Ebola resurgence in Liberia

2016/01/10

The Liberia Crusaders for Peace (LCP) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Healthy Life have embarked on an initiative to prevent the recurrence and relapse of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country. The project code named ˜Dead Body Swabbing Ebola Prevention Program’ is aimed at creating massive awareness in seven of Liberia’s 15 counties on the need to abstain from tampering with dead bodies until the County Health Team completes medical diagnosis and finally declares dead bodies free of the Ebola virus.

A press statement issued here Saturday quotes the Administrator of LCP, Madam Yah Bryant, as saying that her organization has recruited and trained 350 field communicators, mobilizers, monitors and supervisors; pointing out that 50 were selected from each of the seven counties inclunding Lofa, Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Bassa, Bong, Nimba and Grand Cape Mount counties for the project.

Speaking Thursday during the training of over 50 of the communicators, mobilizers, monitors and supervisors inclunding observers in Paynesville, outside Monrovia, Madam Bryant explained that as foot-soldiers the LCP’s field workers will be required to sensitize residents in their respective counties to stop secret burial and always call the County Health Team or community leaders whenever anyone dies in their communities.

Madam Bryant clarified that the ‘Dead Body Swabbing’ technique is an advanced medical method used by medical personnel to quickly determine whether a person died of Ebola or not; adding that as compared to the old method where blood sample was taken from the dead for examination,
the new process only requires placing a cotton-ball in the mouth of the dead body to get saliva which is again diagnosed for Ebola.

She said the project which is in its initial phase, will entail communicators and mobilizers going from door to door mopping the communities and marking houses covered by the exercise to ensure that the message filters down to everyone as this is crucial to prevent the recurrence of the deadly Ebola disease in the country.

The one-day training workshop which was graced by traditional leaders, the chief of the Governors Council of Liberia and the clergy covered topics inclunding community entry, and community and social mobilization.

2016/05/11 Oil, gold, diamonds, palm oil, cocoa, timber: raw materials have long been linked to Africa in a lot of businesspeople’s minds. And in fact the continent is highly dependent on commodities: they constitute as much as 95% of some nations’ export revenues, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. But propping a country’s entire economy on commodities is risky business, like building a mountainside home on stilts. You can’t be sure about the weather, or in this case the commodities market. The current free-fall of oil prices to less than $40 a barrel is a glaring example. “The commodities cycle has tanked out,” says Austin Okere, founder of Computer Warehouse Group (CWG), a Nigerian emerging multinational financial services company. “And this time it looks additional structural than cyclical, so it’s not a matter of waiting it out. Something has to give.”
