  • UNWTO: International tourism – strongest half-year results since 2010

    AFGHANISTAN, 2017/09/09 Destinations worldwide welcomed 598 million international tourists in the initial six months of 2017, some 36 million additional than in the same period of 2016. At 6%, increase was well above the trend of recent years, making the current January-June period the strongest half-year since 2010. Visitor numbers reported by destinations around the world reflect strong request for international travel in the initial half of 2017, according to the new UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) increased by 6% compared to the same six-month period last year, well above the sustained and consistent trend of 4% or higher increase since 2010. This represents the strongest half-year in seven years.

    SRI LANKA, 2016/11/11 As is customary with all inaugural flights landing at the Seychelles International Airport, the Sri Lanka Airlines airbus arriving at Seychelles for the initial time, received a water cannon salute upon arrival. Seychelles welcomed this new airline this week, only two days next Turkish Airlines landed at its international airport for the initial time. This morning marked Sri Lankan Airlines’ maiden flight to the Seychelles.

    CHINA, 2013/12/19 Sri Lanka's tourism promotion arm has tied up with China's "Travel Channel," to promote the island aggressively in China starting from next month, a statement from Sri Lanka Tourism said on Wednesday. "The Travel Channel," which has an audience of 650 million Chinese, will use a mix of both programs and commercials to help promote Sri Lanka. The agreement to start the proposed campaign was as well signed between the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Chinese Travel Channel. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lanka Embassy in China organized this television advertising campaign.
  • Sri Lanka's tourism earnings up 43.4%

    SRI LANKA, 2013/10/24 Strong tourist and remittance earnings have bolstered Sri Lanka's foreign inflows, the Central Bank said here Wednesday. The Central Bank said in its new statement that earnings on account of workers' remittances rose by 16.3 %, year-on-year, to $570 million in August 2013 from $490.1 million in August 2012, Xinhua reported. For the initial eight months of 2013, cumulative inflows from workers' remittances stood at $4.3 billion, a increase of 10.9 % compared to the corresponding period of 2012.
